About This Course

This course teaches mechatronics technicians how a modern plant turns physical quantities such as temperature, pressure, level, flow, force, and position into trustworthy digital data, and how that data is used to control the process. Trainees follow the complete measurement and control chain: sensor and transducer, signal conditioning, analog-to-digital conversion, the industrial 4-20 mA signal, PLC analog input modules and scaling, and finally closed-loop and PID control supervised by SCADA and HMI systems. The terminology and practices follow industry standards such as the 4-20 mA current loop and ISA instrumentation conventions.

Delivered over a focused 40-hour, one-week timeframe (eight hours a day for five days), the course balances theory with hands-on wiring, scaling, logging, and tuning exercises. By the end, trainees can select and connect the right sensor, condition and digitise its signal correctly, wire and scale a 4-20 mA transmitter into a PLC, build a simple data logger, and explain and tune a closed-loop controller, preparing them for real instrumentation and automation roles.

Requirements

  • Completion of relevant lower-level electrical, electronics, or mechatronics courses (including Fundamentals of Electricity and Electronics and an introduction to PLCs), or equivalent technical experience.
  • Basic understanding of Ohm's law, DC circuits, voltage and current measurement, and workshop and electrical safety.
  • Familiarity with using a PC and basic software for the logging and scaling exercises.
  • Access to a multimeter, a 4-20 mA transmitter or simulator, a PLC with an analog input module (e.g. Siemens or Allen-Bradley), and an Arduino kit for the data-logging practical.
