About This Course

Electro-Pneumatics Controls advances Institute for Industrial Technology trainees who already have foundational pneumatic knowledge to intermediate proficiency in electro-pneumatic control systems. Over 40 intensive hours in one week, learners study how pneumatic actuators are controlled using electrical and pneumatic sensing and switching devices such as solenoid valves, relays and proximity sensors. The course covers basic electrical principles, electro-pneumatic components, ISO 1219-1 schematic and connection diagrams, circuit design, construction, simulation, troubleshooting, and safety practices per ISO 4414 and IEC 60204-1.

The aim is to equip trainees with intermediate skills to design, construct, simulate and troubleshoot electro-pneumatic control circuits, to understand electro-pneumatic components, to interpret ISO-standard schematics, and to apply safety standards. Practical exercises emphasise hands-on construction of electro-pneumatic circuits on simulation panels typical of industrial applications, preparing trainees for intermediate roles in industrial automation in Nigeria.

Module 1

Introduction to Electro-pneumatics and Principles

Bridge electrical control and pneumatic power. This module defines electropneumatic terms such as solenoid, relay and proximity sensor, reviews pneumatic components and basic electrical principles, differentiates pneumatic and electrical logic, and outlines the ISO 4414 and IEC 60204-1 safety standards.

Module 2

Electropneumatic Components and Schematics

Identify the components and read the diagrams. You will identify solenoid valves, relays and proximity sensors and their functions, learn the ISO 1219-1 symbols for electropneumatic systems, and interpret schematic and connection diagrams.

Module 3

Circuit Design and Control Theory

Design circuits from control principles. This module covers open- and closed-loop and sequential control, designing electropneumatic schematics and connection diagrams for single- and double-acting cylinder circuits, and applying the relevant safety standards.

Circuit Construction and Simulation

Troubleshooting and Assessment

Requirements

  • Foundational pneumatics knowledge (actuators, valves, compressed-air supply) from a prior Level 1 or Level 2 pneumatics course.
  • Basic electrical understanding (voltage, current, Ohm's law) is helpful; the course reviews these in Module 1.
  • An electro-pneumatic training panel (for example Festo TP 201) or access to FluidSIM simulation software for circuit construction and testing.
  • Personal protective equipment for laboratory work: safety goggles and gloves, plus a notebook, pen and ruler for drawing ISO 1219-1 schematics.
