About This Course

This course teaches mechatronics technicians how the devices of a modern automated plant talk to one another. Instead of running a separate pair of wires from every sensor and actuator back to the controller, today’s factories use digital fieldbus networks that carry the data of many devices over a single shared cable. Trainees learn the structure of plant communication through the automation pyramid, the serial standards RS-232 and RS-485 that underpin the field level, the common network topologies, and then the leading industrial protocols in use across Nigerian and international industry: Modbus, HART, PROFIBUS-DP and PA, PROFINET, and EtherNet/IP.

Delivered over a focused 40-hour, one-week timeframe (eight hours a day for five days), the course balances clear theory with hands-on wiring, addressing, and configuration exercises. By the end, trainees can explain where each protocol sits in the automation hierarchy, choose a suitable bus and topology for a given application, wire and terminate an RS-485 multidrop network, set device addresses, and commission a simple PROFIBUS or industrial-Ethernet segment, preparing them for real installation, commissioning, and maintenance roles.

Requirements

  • Completion of relevant lower-level electrical, electronics, and PLC courses (including Fundamentals of Electricity and Electronics and Fundamentals of Programmable Logic Controllers), or equivalent technical experience.
  • Basic understanding of digital signals, binary numbers, Ohm's law, and electrical and workshop safety.
  • Familiarity with using a PC and basic engineering software for the addressing and configuration exercises.
  • Access to a multimeter, RS-485 cable and terminating resistors, a PLC with a fieldbus or PROFINET/PROFIBUS interface (e.g. Siemens or Allen-Bradley), and at least one fieldbus field device or simulator for the practicals.
