About This Course

This course exposes trainees to the fundamentals of process control and instrumentation, integrating classroom discussion, simulation software, and practical exercises on a process-control workstation. It covers closed-loop control principles, Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), measurement and control of the four common process variables (temperature, level, flow and pressure), and the ON-OFF and PID control techniques used to keep a process at its set-point. Instrumentation symbols follow ISA-5.1/5.4 and the control practices follow IEC and ISA guidance.

Delivered over a focused 40-hour, one-week timeframe, the programme blends theory with hands-on measurement, configuration, tuning and commissioning exercises. The aim is to equip trainees who already have prior knowledge in related fields with the foundational skills to understand, configure, tune, commission and safely maintain process-control systems, with an emphasis on reliability, optimisation and real-world industrial application.

Understand how processes are controlled. This module explains closed-loop control and its characteristics, introduces process-control system integration, and covers the safety considerations that govern instrumentation and control work.

Read the drawings that describe a plant. You will read and interpret Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams, identify key symbols and their functions, and analyse P&IDs for process optimisation and maintenance.

Measurement of Process Variables

Measure what the process is doing. This module covers the measurement and control of the four core process variables — temperature, level, flow and pressure — using the appropriate instruments on a process workstation.

Control Techniques - ON-OFF and PID

Apply the control techniques industry uses. You will explain the operation and characteristics of ON-OFF control and of PID control, configure and tune PID settings for performance, and apply safety and reliability checks.

Requirements

  • Completion of relevant lower-level electrical, electronics, instrumentation or mechatronics courses, or equivalent technical experience.
  • Basic understanding of electrical circuits, sensors, signals and workshop safety.
  • Familiarity with using a PC and software applications for the simulation and configuration exercises.
  • Access to a process-control workstation and simulation/configuration software (for example MATLAB Simulink, or a DCS/PID configuration tool) for the practical work.
