About This Course

Electro-Pneumatics teaches Institute for Industrial Technology trainees how to control compressed-air machinery using electrical signals. Over 40 intensive hours in one week, learners marry the pneumatic power side (cylinders, directional control valves and the air-service unit) with the electrical control side (push-buttons, relays, proximity sensors and solenoid coils). The course follows the international Festo TP 201 teaching tradition: every concept is reinforced by building and simulating real circuits, drawing ISO 1219-1 symbols and wiring panels that mirror industrial automation in Nigerian factories.

Trainees progress from electrical and pneumatic fundamentals, through the core components and their schematic symbols, into the design of indirect (relay) control and self-holding logic, and finally to multi-cylinder sequential circuits, fault diagnosis and lockout/tagout safety. By the end, a graduate can read an electro-pneumatic schematic, build the circuit in FluidSIM or on the panel, make it run a defined sequence, and find and fix faults safely — the everyday work of a mechatronics maintenance technician.

Requirements

  • Completion of a foundational pneumatics course covering cylinders, directional valves and the compressed-air supply (Level 1 or Level 2).
  • Basic electrical literacy (voltage, current, Ohm's law); these are reviewed in Module 1.
  • Access to an electro-pneumatic training panel (for example Festo TP 201) and/or FluidSIM simulation software.
  • Personal protective equipment for laboratory work (safety goggles and gloves), plus a notebook, pen and ruler for drawing ISO 1219-1 schematics.
