About This Course

This course introduces the fundamental concepts of industrial hydraulics, focusing on the control of hydraulic equipment. It covers the physical laws, standards and units that govern fluid power, the technical terms used in the trade, and the design and operation of hydraulic control elements such as power units, actuators, valves and accumulators. Laboratory practice includes simulations of hydraulic control circuits, with a strong emphasis on safety precautions and maintenance techniques.

Delivered as an intensive two-week programme, the course equips students with the knowledge and practical skills to understand hydraulic principles, interpret schematic diagrams to ISO 1219, construct and test basic hydraulic circuits, and maintain and troubleshoot hydraulic systems safely and effectively. Through guided videos, in-class classwork and hands-on assignments, the mechatronics technician learns to analyse system behaviour, build working circuits and adhere to professional safety practice.

Course Content

Module 1

Introduction and Fundamental Principles

Understand the physics of fluid power. This module introduces fluid power systems, the laws of hydraulics such as Pascal's law and Bernoulli's principle, laminar and turbulent flow and their effects, and the properties and maintenance of hydraulic fluids.

What's included
4 Videos 1 Reading 1 Graded Test
Module 2

Hydraulic Actuators and Valves

Meet the components that do the work. You will study hydraulic power generation with pumps and reservoirs, cylinders and their sealing devices, hydraulic motors and accumulators, and the ISO 1219 symbols used to represent every component.

What's included
4 Videos 1 Graded Test
Module 3

Valves, Pressure Transmission and ISO 1219 Schematics

Control pressure, direction and flow. This module covers pressure, directional-control, non-return and flow-control valves and pressure-transmission principles, and how to interpret basic hydraulic schematic diagrams to the ISO 1219 standard.

What's included
4 Videos 1 Reading 1 Graded Test
Module 4

Circuit Construction and Safety

Build and test real hydraulic circuits. You will construct basic circuits from cylinders and valves, design and build circuits from ISO 1219 schematics, test them for pressure and flow, and apply the safety practices essential to working with high-pressure systems.

What's included
3 Videos 1 Reading 1 Graded Test
Module 5

Maintenance, Troubleshooting and Simulation

Keep hydraulic systems reliable. This module covers system maintenance procedures, troubleshooting cylinders, valves and pumps, and simulating and building advanced circuits — completing a full hydraulic circuit with troubleshooting for the assessment.
