About This Course
Fundamentals of Electricity and Electronics provides Institute for Industrial Technology trainees with the foundational knowledge of electricity and electronics that underpins all electrical technology work. Across 120 intensive hours over three weeks, learners study the structure of matter and electron flow, electromotive force and potential difference, Ohm’s law, and the resistors, capacitors, inductors, and batteries used in real circuits. The course then moves through AC and DC, waveforms, magnetism, electromagnetic induction, reactance, transformers, and relays.
Emphasis is placed on practical applications, safety, and hands-on tasks. Trainees interpret electrical symbols, analyse series and parallel circuits, build rectifier and signal-processing circuits with diodes and transistors, learn correct soldering and component-wiring technique, and assemble a simple working power supply as a capstone project. Every topic is tied directly to the bench skills a technician uses every day.
Course Content
Fundamentals of Electricity
Start from the atom and build to working circuits. You will distinguish EMF and potential difference, apply Ohm's law and calculate resistance, voltage and current, identify and connect resistors, capacitors and inductors in series and parallel, decode colour codes, and understand AC/DC waveforms and protective devices like fuses and circuit breakers.
Magnetism, Transformers, and Relays
Understand the magnetism behind machines. This module covers magnetism and electromagnetic induction, inductive and capacitive reactance, and the principle, construction and efficiency of transformers — including building a simple single-phase double-wound transformer — and the operation of electromechanical relays.
Signal Processing, Soldering, and Projects
Put electronics to practical use. You will explore diodes and transistors in signal processing, build and analyse rectifier circuits, learn soldering technique and safety, wire plugs and assemble components on a chassis, and bring it together by building and testing a basic power-supply project.
