Variable Speed (AC) Drives
A hands-on, video-led course on selecting, installing, programming, maintaining and troubleshooting variable speed (AC) drives (VSDs/VFDs) for industrial motors, aligned with IEC 61800 and IEEE 519.
About This Course
This course delivers the foundational knowledge a mechatronics technician needs to work with variable speed drives (VSDs), also called variable frequency drives (VFDs) or AC drives. It begins with the working principles of a drive — how a rectifier, DC bus and IGBT inverter use pulse-width modulation to vary the voltage and frequency fed to an AC motor — together with the mechanical and electrical fundamentals (torque, power, AC/DC, voltage and current) and the Human Machine Interface (HMI) used to access drive data.
Building on this, trainees learn to read motor nameplates to IEC/NEMA definitions, select and match a drive to a motor and load, describe the drive’s internal components and I/O, perform a safe start-up, program a drive from the HMI (ramps, V/f, braking), and finally test, troubleshoot and maintain a complete drive system. Practical workshops mirror real industrial commissioning so that, in one intensive week, students reach foundational competency in AC drives suitable for Nigeria’s manufacturing, oil/gas and process sectors, working to IEC 61800 and IEEE 519 standards.
Course Content
Introduction to Variable Speed Drives
Understand what a variable speed drive does. This module explains VSD working principles, the mechanical fundamentals of torque and power, the electrical fundamentals of AC/DC, voltage and current, and the Human-Machine Interface used to access drive data.
AC Motor Theory and VSD Selection
Match the drive to the motor and job. You will explain AC motor theory with IEC/NEMA nameplate data, select appropriate VSDs for applications, match motors to drives per NEMA standards, and identify drive-system problems.
Drive Components and Operation
Learn what is inside a drive and how to start it. This module describes the major AC-drive components — converters, inverters and PWM — the logic and analog I/O functions, and the recommended start-up procedures, performing a basic start-up.
Programming and Hands-On Operation
Program and run the drive. You will program a VSD using the HMI, operate an AC drive hands-on, set acceleration and deceleration ramps, and learn braking techniques.
Troubleshooting and Applications
Test, troubleshoot and apply the drive. This module covers testing major drive-system functions, identifying and correcting issues, and understanding constant-torque and constant-horsepower applications through a troubleshooting exercise.
