About This Course
This course teaches mechatronics technicians how the electricity grid moves power from where it is generated to where it is used. It follows the real journey of energy: generation, step-up to high voltage for efficient long-distance transmission, the overhead lines and supporting hardware that carry it, the substations and transformers that change voltage levels, and finally the medium- and low-voltage distribution network that feeds factories, offices and homes.
Students learn why power is transmitted at high voltage, how conductors such as ACSR are selected, how insulators, sag and towers are engineered, and how substations, power transformers and distribution transformers step voltage up and down. The course closes with distribution feeders (radial and ring main), overhead versus underground options, feeder protection (fuses, auto-reclosers and sectionalisers) and power quality — voltage drop, voltage regulation and power-factor correction. The content is grounded in Nigerian practice (the TCN transmission grid and DisCo distribution networks) and prepares students for installation, operation and maintenance roles in utilities, manufacturing and building services.
