A hands-on, video-led course on wiring, operating, troubleshooting and maintaining AC motor control systems using DOL, star-delta and auto-transformer starters per IEC 60947 and IEEE 841.
About This Course
This course introduces the principles, construction, wiring and characteristics of AC motor controllers, taking students from zero knowledge to intermediate proficiency. It covers basic motor control components (contactors, relays, timers, fuses, circuit breakers), schematic and connection diagrams, and the operation of common starters — Direct On-Line (DOL), star-delta and auto-transformer — for starting, stopping, reversing and basic sequential control.
Practical workshops emphasise wiring, testing, troubleshooting and preventive maintenance of motor control systems, ensuring personnel safety and equipment protection per IEC 60947 (low-voltage switchgear) and IEEE 841 (motor maintenance) standards. The course prepares students for entry-to-intermediate roles in industrial motor control, such as in Nigeria’s oil/gas and manufacturing sectors.
Course Content
Basic Principles and Safety
Understand motor control from the ground up. This module covers the principles of AC motor control, IEC symbols and controller construction, motor-current and fuse-sizing calculations, and the safety standards — lock-out/tag-out and PPE — with an introduction to preventive maintenance.
Motor Control Components and Wiring
Read the diagrams and wire your first starter. You will interpret schematic and connection diagrams, wire and test a Direct-On-Line (DOL) starter, identify wiring faults with a multimeter, and understand basic sequential control of two motors.
Starters and Control Panels
Wire the starters and panels industry uses. This module covers star-delta and auto-transformer starter principles and wiring, identifying panel components — contactors, timers, fuses and breakers — and wiring and testing control panels for start, stop and reversing.
Installation and Maintenance
Install and maintain motor control gear. You will install DOL and star-delta starters to IEC standards, perform maintenance such as cleaning contactors and lubricating bearings to IEEE 841, use insulation testers, and repair components like fuses and contactors.
Troubleshooting and Assessment
Diagnose faults and prove your skills. This module covers troubleshooting blown fuses, faulty timers and open circuits, installing star-delta starters with interlocks and sequential control, and completing a capstone panel with start, stop and reversing.
