About This Course
This course teaches mechatronics technicians how electrical systems injure people and damage equipment, and how the family of protective devices is selected, installed, tested and maintained to prevent those failures. It moves from the human side of electrical safety — shock, burns, arc flash and safe isolation — into the operating principles of every common protective device: fuses (rewireable, cartridge and HRC), miniature and moulded-case circuit breakers, thermal overload relays, residual current devices (RCDs/ELCBs), earthing and equipotential bonding, and surge protection devices.
Practical workshops emphasise reading a distribution board, sizing and selecting protection, carrying out a safe lockout-tagout isolation, and verifying installations with an insulation tester and an earth-resistance tester. The content is grounded in IEC 60364 (low-voltage installations), IEC 60947 (low-voltage switchgear) and the Nigerian IEE Wiring Regulations, preparing students for entry-to-intermediate maintenance roles in manufacturing, oil and gas, and building services.
