Fundamentals of Pneumatics Automation Systems
A practical, video-led introduction to pneumatic automation: air principles and gas laws, components, ISO 1219-1 schematics, circuit construction and simulation, maintenance, troubleshooting and ISO 4414 safety.
About This Course
This course guides trainees with no prior knowledge from basic to intermediate proficiency in pneumatic automation systems. It focuses on the physical quantities and laws of air, the major pneumatic components (compressors, air service units, actuators and valves), ISO 1219-1 schematic diagrams, circuit design and construction, maintenance and troubleshooting, all set in the context of Nigeria’s industrial sector such as manufacturing and packaging.
Through guided teaching videos, in-class practice on the training panel and structured assessments, students learn to interpret and develop ISO-standard schematics, construct and simulate single- and double-acting cylinder circuits, recognise and correct faults, and apply safety precautions per ISO 4414. The aim is to equip the mechatronics technician to design, implement and maintain pneumatic circuits ready for real industrial automation applications.
Course Content
Introduction to Pneumatics and Principles
Understand the physics of compressed air. This module covers the physical quantities and gas laws behind pneumatics — pressure, flow and volume, Boyle's and Charles' laws — pneumatic applications in Nigerian industry, and the ISO 4414 safety precautions.
Pneumatic Components and ISO Symbols
Meet the components and how they are drawn. You will identify compressors, air-service units, single- and double-acting cylinders, rotary actuators, and directional, pressure, non-return and flow-control valves — and learn the ISO 1219-1 symbols and how each component works.
Compressed Air Systems and Basic Circuit Design
Produce, prepare and use compressed air. This module covers air production and preparation with filters, regulators and lubricators, distribution and piping, and interpreting and building basic circuits such as a single-acting cylinder with a 3/2-way valve from ISO 1219-1 schematics.
Intermediate Circuit Construction and Simulation
Design and build more capable circuits. You will interpret intermediate schematics, develop functional sequences, and construct and simulate double-acting cylinder circuits with 5/2-way valves and flow control on a training panel, applying ISO 4414 safety.
Maintenance, Troubleshooting, and Assessment
Keep pneumatic systems running. This module covers maintenance procedures such as filter cleaning, valve lubrication and leak checks, identifying and correcting faults like air leaks and valve sticking, and completing a double-acting cylinder circuit for the assessment.
