About This Course

This course provides intensive hands-on training in the operation and maintenance of grinding machines, focusing on grinding techniques, machine components, wheel selection and safe operational practices. Students develop manipulative skills to produce precise components using surface, cylindrical and centre-less grinders, and learn the proper use of shop instruments, wheel dressing, balancing and off-hand tool shaping.

The aim of the course is to equip mechatronics technicians with the practical skills to operate grinding machines, produce components to specification, select and maintain grinding wheels, and adhere strictly to safety regulations, ensuring proficiency in grinding and fitting for modern engineering applications within an intensive two-week timeframe.

Course Content

Module 1

Introduction to Grinding Machines and Safety

Meet the grinding machines and how to use them safely. This module explains grinding principles and their importance in engineering, the types of grinders — surface, cylindrical and centre-less — their components, and the safety precautions and wheel-speed calculations that govern their use.

What's included
4 Videos 1 Reading 1 Graded Test
Module 2

Grinding Wheels and Selection

Choose and maintain the right wheel. You will learn the composition and classification of grinding wheels, the characteristics of a good wheel for a given job and the factors in selecting one, then the turning, dressing and balancing that keep wheels performing.

What's included
4 Videos 1 Reading 1 Graded Test
Module 3

Cylindrical and Centre-less Grinding

Produce precise cylindrical work. This module covers the operation and components of cylindrical and centre-less grinders, producing good surface finishes to specification, and grinding parallel, taper and necked pins and rollers — with wheel dressing and safety throughout.

What's included
4 Videos 1 Reading 1 Graded Test
Module 4

Off-Hand Grinding and Tool Shaping

Shape cutting tools by hand. You will operate the off-hand grinder to shape cutting tools, flat and twist drills, chisels and scrapers, apply the correct grinding angles and safety precautions, and produce complex tools and components.

What's included
4 Videos 1 Reading 1 Graded Test
Module 5

Practical Applications and Assessment

Grind across every machine type. This module has you perform surface, cylindrical and centre-less grinding to precise specifications, apply wheel dressing and safety practices, and complete a full grinding-cycle capstone such as a precision pin or tool set.
