A hands-on, video-led course that develops the skills to operate horizontal and vertical milling machines safely and produce precision engineering components to NIMS and ISO tolerances.
About This Course
This course equips trainees with practical skills and theoretical knowledge in operating milling machines, focusing on precision component production, tool selection, work holding and maintenance. It covers machine types, ISO 45001 safety protocols, and advanced operations such as keyway and helical gear cutting, aligned with international standards (ISO 230, ISO 2768-m, NIMS, City & Guilds).
Over 80 intensive hours, trainees progress from machine fundamentals and safety induction through to producing parallel strips, stepped blocks, keyways and gears, finishing with a full maintenance cycle, a safety audit and a final assessed project that demonstrates foundational proficiency in milling and fitting.
Course Content
Introduction to Milling Machines
Meet the milling machine and work it safely. This module identifies the horizontal and vertical machine types and their elements to NIMS standards, explains the working principles, and covers the ISO 45001 safety induction and machine-shop hazards.
Machine Operations and Precision Components
Produce your first precise components. You will operate the milling machine to produce parallel strips and stepped faces to ISO 2768-m, identify cutters — slab, side-and-face and angular — and practise milling with tolerance checks using callipers.
Work Holding Devices and Tool Selection
Hold the work and set the tools right. This module covers selecting work-holding devices such as vices and clamps, mounting arbors, adaptors and collet chucks, and setting milling speeds and feeds to manufacturer specifications.
Advanced Milling Operations
Cut keyways and gears. You will produce keyways within and at shaft ends to ISO tolerance, demonstrate helical gear cutting to NIMS standards, adjust settings for precision, and inspect work with micrometers.
Tool Maintenance and Safety
Select fixtures and keep tools sharp. This module covers selecting milling fixtures and tools for the job, preventive maintenance to manufacturer guidelines, identifying cutter wear, and performing basic maintenance tasks safely.
Practical Application and Safety Compliance
Apply the skills and reinforce safety. You will produce a block with a stepped face to ISO 2768-m, reinforce ISO 45001 safety protocols, conduct a maintenance check, and review compliance.
Complex Component Production
Produce a demanding component. This module has you produce a helical gear or keyway to NIMS tolerance, adjust speeds and feeds for precision, inspect with precision instruments, and document the process to City & Guilds standards.
Fixture Use and Tool Handling
Use fixtures for complex work. You will use milling fixtures for complex shapes to NIMS standards, mount and dismount arbors and adaptors, test tool stability during operation, and adjust fixtures for precision.
Maintenance and Safety Audit
Maintain the machine and audit safety. This module covers a full maintenance cycle to ISO standards, a safety audit to ISO 45001, identifying potential hazards, and proposing safety enhancements.
Final Project and Evaluation
Produce and present a final component. You will produce a final component such as a keyway or gear to NIMS standards, apply ISO safety and maintenance practices, and present your work for assessment and evaluation.
