Pumps & Compressors
A practical, video-led course on the principles, selection, operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of industrial pumps and compressors, with a strong emphasis on workshop safety.
About This Course
This course covers the principles, operation, and maintenance of pumps and compressors, focusing on basic fluid principles, the major pump families (hydraulic, centrifugal, rotary, reciprocating and special service), their parts, and auxiliary devices such as seals, packings and bearings. It also introduces compressed-air fundamentals, compressor types, ancillaries and industrial applications.
Through guided videos, in-class practice and assessments, students learn to dismantle, assemble, align and maintain pumps and compressors while applying the safety rules expected on a real plant. The aim is to equip the mechatronics technician to select, install, operate, maintain and troubleshoot this equipment, and to ensure efficient and safe performance in industrial settings.
Course Content
Introduction to Pumps and Pump Types
Learn what pumps do and how to choose them. This module defines pumps and their principles, covers selection and applications, the main pump types — hydraulic, centrifugal, rotary, reciprocating and special-service — and the seals and packings that keep them tight.
Pump Installation and Maintenance
Install and keep pumps working. You will study pump bearings and alignment techniques, installation procedures, and maintenance and troubleshooting methods — practising bearing maintenance, alignment and fault-finding under proper safety rules.
Compressor Fundamentals and Types
Understand compressed air and the machines that make it. This module explains compressed-air generation, the types of compressors such as rotary screw and reciprocating, compressor layout and ancillaries like filters and regulators, and their industrial applications.
Compressor Maintenance and Safety
Service compressors safely and correctly. You will cover the theoretical and practical considerations of compressor construction and maintenance, dismantling and assembly procedures, ancillary maintenance, and safe troubleshooting of common faults.
Practical Applications and Assessment
Consolidate pump and compressor skills. This module has you test and align pumps and compressors and complete a maintenance-cycle mini-project — for example a centrifugal pump or rotary compressor — for the final assessment.
