About This Course
This course provides intensive, hands-on training in the operation and principles of shaping machines and in fitting techniques, building the manipulative skills needed to produce precision machine components. It covers the working principles, types and elements of shaping machines, shaping operations, work holding methods, cutting speed and feed calculations, tool grinding, and the correct use of shop instruments such as vernier callipers and micrometers.
Safety procedures in machine-shop operations are emphasised throughout, aligned with ISO 230-1 (machine tool geometric accuracy) and ISO 1101 (geometrical tolerancing). Practical exercises focus on marking out, producing components and fitting assemblies, preparing students for entry-level roles in manufacturing, maintenance and mechanical engineering within a focused two-week programme.
Course Content
Introduction to Shaping Machines and Safety
Meet the shaping machine and work it safely. This module covers the features and working principle of the shaping machine, its elements such as the ram, clapper box and table, and the workshop safety precautions you will apply while producing your first basic setup.
Work Holding and Shaping Operations
Hold the work and shape it to specification. You will learn the four basic work-holding methods, select cutting tools, and set up the machine for flat surfaces, slots, keyways, contours and dovetails — working from orthographic drawings under proper safety.
Cutting Speeds, Feeds, and Tool Grinding
Get the cutting conditions and tools right. This module covers calculating cutting speeds and feeds, and grinding tools to the correct rake and clearance angles — selecting the right grinding wheels and applying safety throughout.
Marking Out, Fitting, and Measuring Tools
Mark out, fit and measure precisely. You will use marking-out tools, perform fitting techniques such as filing, scraping and assembly (press and clearance fits), and use and maintain vernier callipers and micrometers to produce components to precise tolerances.
Practical Applications and Assessment
Bring shaping and fitting together. This module has you perform advanced multi-feature shaping, use work-holding devices and cutting tools effectively, and complete a capstone such as a machine part with slots and precise fits.
