About This Course
Work Ethics 4: Family & Society explores the social nature of the human person and the roles each of us plays in society and its sub-societies, such as the family, the state and community groups, through a light philosophical approach. Over 40 intensive hours across one week, trainees examine society as an ordered structure that exists for human flourishing, learn to differentiate its sub-groups, and study the principles of human dignity, mutual responsibility, solidarity and subsidiarity that bind people together. Practical components include reflective discussions, case studies and role-plays that illustrate ethical principles in social and workplace contexts.
The aim of the course is to equip mechatronics trainees with an understanding of man’s social nature, the structure and roles of society and its sub-societies, and the importance of the common good, enabling them to apply ethical principles in social and workplace interactions. By the end of the week a trainee should be able to explain why the human person is naturally social, distinguish the family from the state and intermediate societies, articulate what the common good means, and demonstrate ethical behaviour as a member of a family, a citizen and a professional.
Course Content
Nature of Man and Society
Begin with man as a social being. This module explains human dignity and man's created-for-relationship nature, defines society as an ordered structure for human flourishing, and introduces mutual responsibility and community through reflective discussion.
Man, Family, and Society
Explore the first and foundational community. You will differentiate the family as the foundational sub-group in society, examine man's roles within it — love, support and responsibility — and discuss how the family fosters wider societal well-being.
Man, State, and Intermediate Societies
Understand your place in the wider community. This module defines the state as a sub-group for governance and order, identifies intermediate societies such as community groups and professional associations, and illustrates civic participation and the principle of subsidiarity.
The Common Good and Work
See how your work serves everyone. You will define the common good as the conditions enabling human flourishing, explain work as a contribution to personal and societal well-being, and discuss ethical work practices such as justice and integrity.
Practical Application and Assessment
Put social ethics into practice. This module has you apply ethical principles in workplace and social scenarios through role-play, illustrate your societal roles in a capstone presentation, and reflect on living dignity and the common good.
