About This Course
Work Ethics 3: Virtues explores the concept of virtue and its application in the workplace, focusing on the traits that enable employees to contribute to organisational success. Over 40 intensive hours across one week, trainees study the four cardinal virtues (prudence, justice, fortitude and temperance) and a wide range of work-relevant virtues including responsibility, industriousness, obedience, initiative, discipline, order, service, humility, honesty, loyalty, dependability and exemplariness. The course is practical throughout, using case studies, role-play and workplace scenarios so that mechatronics technicians can put each virtue into action on the job.
The aim of the course is to give students a clear understanding of virtues, to enable them to differentiate and prioritise the virtues most relevant to employment, and to demonstrate their practical application in professional settings. By the end of the week a trainee should be able to define virtue, distinguish the cardinal virtues from work-specific virtues, illustrate how each virtue applies to real workplace challenges, and integrate these traits into an exemplary professional character that enhances employability and strengthens the organisation.
Course Content
Understanding Virtues
Start with what a virtue is and why it matters. This module explains the concept of virtue in human and professional life and the four cardinal virtues — prudence, justice, fortitude and temperance — and how they apply to the workplace and company objectives.
Work-Specific Virtues: Responsibility and Industriousness
Focus on the virtues employers value most. You will differentiate responsibility and industriousness as workplace virtues, see how they drive job performance and organisational success, and practise applying them through role-play and case studies.
Work-Specific Virtues: Obedience, Initiative, Discipline, Order
Build the traits that make teams work. This module differentiates obedience, initiative, discipline and order, illustrates their use in professional settings, and analyses their impact on teamwork and productivity through simulations and exercises.
Work-Specific Virtues: Service, Humility, Honesty, Loyalty, Dependability
Develop the virtues that earn trust. You will differentiate service, humility, honesty, loyalty and dependability, illustrate their application in professional relationships, and discuss their role in fostering trust and collaboration.
Exemplariness and Assessment
Bring the virtues together in practice. This module explains exemplariness in professional work, shows how all the virtues integrate in workplace scenarios, and has you complete an ethical workplace-scenario analysis for the final assessment.
