Technical Communication

About This Course

The English-language competence a technician actually needs to study, train and work: accurate grammar and sentence construction, clear technical writing, confident reading of manuals and safety sheets, and the reports, letters and spoken presentations expected on the job. Communication here is treated as a trade skill, not a school subject.

Each topic pairs a comprehensive written lesson with worked examples and classwork, and ends with its own test – fifty questions drawn at random from a large bank, which you can retake until you pass.

What Will You Learn?

Course Content

Module 1 · 4 hours to complete

Remedial English

Build the language foundation everything else rests on. You will work through the communication process at work, the parts of speech, sentence construction, tenses, concord, punctuation and spelling, reported speech and vocabulary building - then put them to use in paragraphs, descriptive, narrative, expository and argumentative essays, and in formal letters, memos and emails. Speaking and listening are practised alongside, because on the workshop floor you must also follow and give spoken instructions.

Module 2 · 3 hours to complete

Comprehension & Summary

Read with purpose and say what a text means in your own words. This module covers skimming, scanning and reading for detail, the comprehension question types and how to answer them, working out meaning from context, and reading real technical material - manuals, safety data sheets and specifications. You will then learn to summarise to a word limit, make usable notes, and recognise the figures of speech, imagery, style and genre that shape how a text reads.

Module 3 · 2 hours to complete

Report Writing

Master the technician's main written product. You will learn the types of report used at work - fault, progress, incident and investigation - their structure from terms of reference to recommendations, and their layout. From there you build a full report through the graded ramp, write in objective technical style, present data in tables and figures, edit a draft for clarity and completeness, produce the everyday workplace documents, and present a report aloud.
