Industrial Safety
About This Course
The health, safety and environmental practice that underpins every workshop course at IIT. It is taught in a deliberately systematic order – from responsibilities and the hazard/risk idea, through the everyday habits of PPE and 5S housekeeping, on to manual handling and work at height, electrical and fire safety, and hazardous substances, and finally to risk assessment and first aid – so that it builds up step by step.
Each topic pairs a comprehensive written lesson with worked scenarios and classwork, and ends with its own test – fifty questions drawn at random from a large bank, which you can retake until you pass. A pass in Industrial Safety is the prerequisite for progression to the workshop courses.
Course Content
Foundations of Workplace Safety
Start where every safe workshop starts: knowing who is responsible for what, and being able to tell a hazard from a risk. You will cover employer and employee duties under the Factories Act, the National Policy on OSH and the Employees Compensation Act, alongside ISO 45001 and ILO principles; the hazard-risk-control idea and the hierarchy of controls; why accidents happen, through unsafe acts and unsafe conditions and the behaviours that prevent them; and the safety signs and colour codes you must be able to read at a glance.
PPE, Housekeeping & Discipline (5S)
The daily habits that keep a workshop safe. You will learn the personal protective equipment used for each part of the body and what each type actually protects against, then how to select it for the job, fit it correctly, inspect it before use and store it afterwards - including the clothing and jewellery that must never be worn near machinery. The module closes with housekeeping and spill control through the 5S method, and the guarding and hand-safety basics that keep fingers out of moving parts.
Manual Handling, Lifting & Height
Most workshop injuries come from moving things and from working above the ground. This module teaches the safe manual-handling technique step by step - assess, stance, grip, legs, no twist - and when to call for a team lift instead. You will then cover mechanical aids from trolleys to hoists, slings and cranes, with the pre-use inspections each needs and forklift awareness; ladder selection, the 4:1 rule, footing and three points of contact; and the ergonomics of fitting the task to the person so that injuries do not build up over years.
Electrical & Fire Safety
The two hazard families that kill fastest. You will learn how electricity injures - the body as part of the circuit, shock, burns and arc flash - and how earthing, protective devices and safe working practice prevent it; then safe isolation and lock-out / tag-out, done as a disciplined procedure rather than a habit. The fire half covers the fire triangle, fire classes A to F and choosing the right extinguisher, the PASS technique, and evacuation with alarms, assembly points and head-count. Confined-space entry closes the module.
Chemical & Hazardous Substances
Chemicals harm quietly, so the rules must be followed before anything is felt. This module covers the GHS pictograms and labels and your Right-to-Know, how to read a safety data sheet section by section and act on it, the four routes of entry into the body and the controls for toxic liquids, dusts, fumes and vapours - ventilation, substitution, enclosure and the right respiratory protection - and the precautions that apply to compressed gases and pressure systems, together with the industrial-hygiene habits that limit exposure.
Risk Assessment, First Aid & Response
Bring it all together and be ready when something goes wrong. You will work through the five-step risk assessment and produce one for a real workshop task, then use Job Safety Analysis to break a job into steps and build a safe working procedure. The first-aid half covers bleeding, burns, shock, the recovery position and CPR awareness, with the universal precautions a first-aider takes against bloodborne infection. Finally you will learn what must be reported, to whom and how - including the employer and NSITF duties - and how to investigate an incident to its root cause.
