About This Course

This Level 2 course equips students with entry-level skills in computer-aided drafting (CAD), building on existing manual electrical and mechanical drafting knowledge. It covers the components of a CAD workstation, the relationship between CAD and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM), the AutoCAD interface, shortcut commands and practical applications, enabling students to create and edit technical drawings for industry.

Delivered intensively over two weeks (80 hours), the aim is to give students hands-on skills in using AutoCAD for drafting: creating, editing and managing multi-view, pictorial and 3D drawings, and applying these skills to produce industry-relevant technical drawings such as circuit diagrams, chassis layouts and mechanical components.

Module 1

CAD Fundamentals and AutoCAD Basics

Move from the drawing board to the screen. This module introduces the components of a CAD workstation and the relationship between CAD and CAM, then the AutoCAD interface, shortcut commands and the basic draw and navigation tools you will use throughout the course.

Module 2

Drawing, Editing, and Text

Edit and organise drawings like a professional. You will apply modify commands — move, copy, trim, extend, offset, mirror and scale — create and format text, and manage layers and viewports to keep multi-view drawings clean and correctly structured.

Module 3

Multi-View and Pictorial Drawings

Produce the standard drawings industry expects. This module covers creating multi-view drawings from orthographic projections, reusing components with blocks and the design centre, applying dimensions, and drawing isometric and oblique pictorial views.

Module 4

3D Modelling and Practical Projects

Build in three dimensions and apply it to real jobs. You will use 3D modelling tools such as extrude and revolve with basic rendering, then complete industry-relevant projects — a spanner, an auto-electrical circuit, a chassis layout and a PCB design — using layers, blocks and exploded views.

Requirements

  • Completion of Level 1 Engineering Drawing, Drafting and Blueprint Reading (or equivalent manual drafting knowledge).
  • Access to a computer with AutoCAD installed (a free DraftSight or Fusion 360 trial may be used for some exercises).
  • Basic computer literacy: using a mouse, keyboard and managing files.
