About This Course

Digital Techniques & Logic Control gives Institute for Industrial Technology trainees the foundational knowledge of digital systems needed for microcomputer hardware servicing and basic PLC programming. Across 80 intensive hours over two weeks, learners study number systems and codes, the operation of logic gates, Boolean algebra, and the design and analysis of combinational and sequential logic circuits. The course covers data transmission, IC datasheet interpretation, schematic reading, and systematic fault finding.

Emphasis is placed on laboratory practice, accuracy, and safety. Trainees build truth tables, simplify circuits with Boolean algebra and Karnaugh maps, design adders, multiplexers, flip-flops, counters and shift registers, interpret 7400-series datasheets and schematics, and troubleshoot faulty boards. The course ends with a capstone project such as a traffic-light controller or digital timer, preparing students for advanced courses like PLC programming.

Module 1

Introduction and Fundamentals

Build the foundation of digital electronics. This module covers digital systems, number systems and codes, the logic gates (AND, OR, NOT, NAND, NOR, XOR, XNOR) and their truth tables, and Boolean algebra for analysing and simplifying circuits.

Combinational Logic Circuits

Design circuits that respond to their inputs. You will design combinational circuits such as adders and multiplexers using Boolean algebra, implement them with logic gates and 7400-series ICs, interpret IC datasheets to select components, and test the results in the lab.

Module 3

Sequential Logic Circuits

Add memory and timing to your designs. This module covers flip-flops, counters and registers, designing and analysing sequential circuits with timing diagrams, interpreting schematic diagrams, and building and testing circuits such as shift registers using ICs.

Module 4

Troubleshooting and Practical Applications

Find and fix faults in digital circuits. You will learn troubleshooting techniques such as signal tracing and fault isolation, identify common faults, interpret complex schematics, and complete a mini-project such as a counter or traffic-light controller.
